Prenatal Alcohol Exposure
Have you ever wondered how prenatal alcohol exposure is determined or assessed? It’s the only cause of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and one of the four prongs of the FASD diagnosis, but mostly it’s covered briefly in discussions or dryly in diagnostic books.
A Facebook community member recently talked to me about advice on asking her adopted daughter’s biological mother about her prenatal alcohol exposure history so they could get a a proper FASD diagnosis. We use a form at the Indian Health Board to start a discussion, but there’s a skill in how to approach someone in a nonjudgmental and non-shaming way to get sensitive information like this.
